Booking (and connecting for) podcasts can be hit or miss and creativity in scheduling is often rewarded. My colleague Aaron connected with Charlene on the phone several days before the Community 2.0 conference and found out she would only be in Las Vegas for 12 hours. She planned to arrive at midnight on Monday and would leave immediately following her keynote the next morning. Thinking on his feet, Aaron suggested we could pick her up at the airport and have a conversation on the ride to the ho ...     Read entire post

Earlier this week I presented to a local group of social media insiders and influencers at Social Media Breakfast #5 in Inman Square. Organized by Bryan Person, SMB is growing in propularity with each event. This breakfast drew 50+ people despite an overnight snowstorm that changed over to freezing rain by early morning. The format was a series of short, five minute presentations* on "How Twitter Changed My Life (and how it could change yours too!)." I was one of four presenters and ...     Read entire post

Last week, I wrote a post about the Microsoft/Yahoo deal and in the end was really excited about the possibility for social search. Well, Google's leading VP in search was interviewed recently and she considers social search "the future of search." She goes into what it is, how Google might enable social search, what's the future of search, and how Google might work with MySpace, Facebook and others to allow them to re-rank Google results and let them test their own approach to social ...     Read entire post

So, I'm driving home from dinner with a client tonight when I come across some crazy wa-wa 70's music on the radio. It sounds just like The Love Boat theme song without the lyrics... it's really something special. Anyhow, it got me thinking about The Love Boat and how it was some really trashy television. It doesn't seem possible that we could sink any lower, but then someone came up with the concept of reality TV. The latest is a show called  "The Moment of Truth," which makes me ...     Read entire post

My two daughters were eating breakfast and watching Curious George before school this morning (I know, I know... I shouldn't do this, but sometimes it's the only way to get food in them and get out the door in the morning.) Anyhow, all of a sudden my four year old excaims, "Dad, you have to see this! It's so cool! Can you rewind the TV?" Of course, this tv doesn't have Tivo, but pausing/rewinding tv shows has become 'normal' to her. After trying to explain to her that this tv isn't abl ...     Read entire post

When I fired up my laptop on Friday, I was surprised by the first tweet that caught my attention in the Twitter - stream. "Microsoft and Yahoo...wow!". Wow was the right sentiment, IMHO... this is BIG news. So I surfed on over to the NY Times to figure our what was behind the headline. The letter sent by Microsoft to Yahoo is great read to get a sense of the tone set by Microsoft. Everything you need to know to get started is right there. Thinking about this over the weekend, it becam ...     Read entire post

I was at a cocktail party the other night when the host asked me about flat panel TV's. He'd won a sales award at work and they told him to find the brand/model he wanted and let them know. He'd done some research, but wanted to confirm what he was hearing. Sidebar: I'm an a/v junkie and spend more of my waking hours on the AVS Forum boards than I'd care to admit. I'm not bleeding edge, but typically jump into technology earlier than most. Back to the party, first I wanted to know where ...     Read entire post

Originally, I was going to write a post today called "Twitter: Revisited." Some of you might remember a post I wrote last month about Twitter, focused on why it wasn't ready for prime time. Well, I've had some time to use it more (220 tweets and counting) and would like to share my new perspective. However, several of my colleagues here on We Are Smarter Than Me have relentlessly covered Twitter in recent posts, so I'll put that one on the back burner for now. Instead, let's talk abou ...     Read entire post

Getting ready for Thanksgiving, but just had to share two articles I read this morning in the NYT. Making Social Connections and Selling Cookies - This article talks about how Pepperidge Farm is launching a social networking site for their primary customers (women) to maintain friendships. There's good info on how they're launching, metrics on how a campaign like this can replace existing marketing efforts and links to this another social networking campaign around the Goldfish line. ...     Read entire post

Now that a week's gone by and the dust has settled, we have a much clearer picture of what happened last week when Google announced it's "revolutionary" OpenSocial initiative. What was initially considered a checkmate move by Google in the chess game with Facebook, now seems more like an attempt to "PR scoop" a worthy adversary. I found the following posts extremely rational responses to the initial "the sky is falling" posts that happened on day one. On 11/2/07, D ...     Read entire post
