From what I have read about online collaborative efforts, one of the main reasons for contributing is to join a community. As this project stands, we are set to write a book and disband. Thus, the community we need is unlikely to form, simply because the group will soon lose its reason for being. As I see it, we need a purpose. Writing a book is a goal, not a purpose. In order to write the book, we need a community. For that community to form, it needs a reason for being. "To write a book", is not really a reason for being. I say we look for something broader, like "to push the boundaries on what a community of people can accomplish". Our first task can be a book, but after that, who knows? Whatever we do, we have to find a way for the community to take ownership of this project. I feel like a select number of individuals are trying to get the project launched by providing structure, when in fact we need to get people excited about joining and contributing. This can be done. We just need to figure out how to do it. |

Hello all, I found this project third hand (link off a link off a link) and I have published several works in community and/or wiki or creative commons formats and I work in new media and locative media. I think it could benefit from more visibility in the creative use of technology sector. I know robotics experts, geneticists working with visualization, artists/programmers etc that could have some insight into this project that don't know about it. I can post info about it to sites like rhizome if you can provide a text call that lays out the guidelines. I think this may help at the least with dialog and a few more collaborators best, jeremy |
