Hi everyone Congratulations to the WASTM team for the new structure - I find it much more challenging and it instigates (me at least) more to contribute. I only noticed that the topics on the forum dont reflect yet the new structure. I really liked the new suggested chapter "We can do it, but how?", and would like to discuss it here, but couldnt find an appropriate place. The chapter mentions types of communities, and I havent seen anywhere (but I havent read everything yet!) any kind of description of what are the most common types of communities. Don´t you think this is important? I have been discussing communities with some friends here in Brazil, and we disagreed about whether sites like fotolog.com are communities or not. It doesn´t look like that to me, as they are not there to promote interaction among users, but for each user to post his/her picture to show their own friends. What do you think about? About the question itself, and the importance of identifying and somehow analising characteristics of main formats of communities? |

This topic is definately important to explore...so please continue with it.
The example of fotolog.com is interesting. As you point out, they do not "directly" promote user interaction. But indirectly, the effect is the same. I know that here in Mexico, fotologs are hugely popular and many people perform social networking through the comments that they leave in the fotologs. This is also what occurs with blogs. The actual instance, the fotolog or blog, isn't the community. It's the collection of friends that have fotologs and blogs that form Blogospheres, which are definately more in line with what we would call a community. |

But, do we have an appropriate place to post this discussion, joe? Would it really be on the "We can do it, but how?" chapter? |

Isaac -- Chris has a good point. I know you're probably working on it, but the forums need to change in order to reflect the challenges presented in the wiki. At least their should be a one-to-one relationship to what we see their and what we see in the forums.
Chris -- At the side of each challenge is a link to the related forum. For now, Challenge 16: How do we go about creating communities?, is linked to the "General Discussions" forum. I would post your topic there so that Isaac can review them all and move them into a new forum when he get's the chance. |

um....not really, you'll want to go to:
Forums > Book Wiki > General Discussions http://www.wearesmarter.org/communitytools/discussthebook/tabid/80/view/topics/forumid/1/Default.aspx
Just to clarify, any discussions related to the book project and its challenges should be inside the "Book Wiki" Forums, while anything that talks about the WASTM community as a whole and the site itself, generally go in the "General Community Discussions" forum.
Again, I'm not an authority on this. It's just what I think makes sense. |
