Thomas Malone's comments:
Embedded comments in [***brackets***].....
OVERALL
0. Looks great!
HOME PAGE
1. "We>Me" logo is nice. Maybe this could even be the book title.
2. "The central premise of our book is that large groups of people can, and in many cases should, take responsibility for business functions that are currently performed by companies or experts. Research shows that groups of people [***can be***] smarter than experts, and we believe this holds true in many (though perhaps not all) business endeavors.
3. "A few books have recently been written on this topic, but they all fail to confront one central paradox: while they extol the power of communities, they were each written by one person. We're going to put this paradox to the test by inviting hundreds or thousands of authors to contribute. Each one will share equally in the allocation of the book royalties which will be distributed to [***charities of their choice***], and also will be listed on the book as an author. "
[***I think it's an excellent idea to distribute the royalties to charity. It's unlikely that the amounts would be significant anyway, and this gives the whole endeavor a more "wholesome" feel.***]
4. All the rest of the links on this page are broken now so I can't look at them.
INTRODUCTORY LETTER
5. "Research shows that groups of people [***can be***] smarter than experts.
6. "Patients faced with rare diseases are increasingly turning to internet discussion groups to learn more about risks and treatment options, and as a result [***are***] participating ..."
7. "Each one will share equally in the book royalties [***(distributed to charities of their choice)***] and be listed by the publisher as an author."
8. Next to last paragraph could probably be omitted since the organizations (and people) listed are now signers of the letter.
9. Last paragraph needs to be rewritten to reflect broader participation now planned.
FAQ PAGE
10. "October 1st, 2006 - Members of the Wharton Business School and MIT Sloan School of Management communities (including alumni, students, faculty and subscribers to various school publications - all told, close to one million people) will be invited to participate in the book-writing process. [***rewrite to reflect broader participation?***] This first phase of writing will last for two months. "
11. "December 1st, 2006 - We will take a snapshot of the book in its current form. This snapshot will form the basis for a [***possible major restructuring of the book, followed by further editing***]. [***Discussion forum conversations may continue online past this date.***omit?***]
12. "All authors will share equally in the royalties that come from the publication of the book, independent of the amount of writing (beyond the minimum) that you contribute to the wiki[***, and royalties will be donated to a charity of your choice.***] [***Indeed,***omit] it is possible that in the final editing process the comments you contributed might conceivably be cut from the book - much like star actors whose best work was "left on the cutting room floor." Whether your work is included in the printed version of the book or not, every author will be assumed to have advanced the state of thinking and will therefore receive his or her share of royalties [ ***to be donated to charity***] (We should note that if you are participating in this project to [***make your favorite charity rich***], you're probably wasting your time. A successful business book might sell 100,000 copies at a cover price of $30. At the royalty rate of 5 percent, this generates a royalty pool of $150,000; if 1,000 authors participate, each would receive $150). [***Isn't the standard royalty rate in publishing 15%? I think these figures should be adjusted accordingly.***] Royalties will be [***sent each year to a charity of your choice.***]
13. Who will be able to participate and how will this process be monitored? [The answer to this question needs to be rewritten to reflect the current plans for broader participation and royalties to charity.]
ADVISORY BOARD PAGE
14. "Thomas W. Malone is the Patrick J. McGovern Professor of Management at the MIT Sloan School of Management. He is also the founder and director of the MIT Center for [***Collective Intelligence. He was also the founding director of the MIT Center for ***] Coordination Science and was one of the two founding co-directors of the MIT Initiative on "Inventing the Organizations of the 21st Century". His most recent book is The Future of Work: How the New Order of Business Will Shape Your Organization, Your Management Style, and Your Life. Professor Malone has also published over 50 articles, research papers, and book chapters; been an inventor on 11 patents; co-edited three books; [*** co-founded three software companies; and consulted and served as a board member for a number of other organizations***]."
15. I didn't know you had officially invited the other people here to be on the advisory board. I think they're all fine to have, but in the future I would suggest that I be in the loop on inviting new Advisory Board members.
