Why, on this night, ...? Oh, sorry, I meant the other four questions - the ones at the top of each chapter. First of all, I like very much the positioning of these questions as full text at the top of each chapter. It makes the message to the reader much clearer. Nice job, whoever thought of that. I also like the idea of limiting the creation of chapters via a feedback form - also a prudent choice. I'd like to suggest a mino change to the questions themselves. Currently they are: 1. Does your company leverage "community"? 2. If so, how and in which area(s)? 3. If not, what are the barriers? 4. Do you know other companies that are leveraging community? I think question #4 is a variant of #1, so I suggest we combine them. I think the dichotomoy between questions #2 and #3 is a false one - companies face barriers whether they succeed or not. And finally, I think we're missing the most important question - what advice would you give the reader? So here's my suggested modifications to the questions. They become very slightly longer, but given the new format of the questions I think it is acceptable: 1. Does your company, or other companies you know, leverage "community"? 2. If so, how and in which area(s)? 3. What are the barriers to making it work? 4. Given the above, what are the key "rules of thumb" you'd suggest to readers? |

I'd like to see some discussion about the role of Standards, Standards Development Organizations, and Consortia. Often standards, if done "right", stimulate technologies and then give rise to entire industries. Witness the Web and MPEG. Many standards are concensus standards developed by a community and the "best and brightest" float to the top and things work. Also, perhaps just as often, the concensus group tries to develop a technology that's not quite ready and the standard fails. Or the standard group falls into political pitfalls and nothing useful happens. All of these possibilities occur. Where in this chapter organization should this topic fall?? Sandy

I don't think this topic falls easily into any of the existing chapters (I assume you feel the same way, otherwise you simply would have stasrted writing in one of them). We are working on launching a discussion group where new chapters would be proposed. I personally think a chapter (perhaps it would be short, but sweet) on standards and associated topics would be excellent. It woul change the basic chapter structure of the book, but I'm not woried about that so early in the process. Let's just see where it takes us. So - I would wait a few days until we have the "new chapter" discussion forum up, and then repost your idea there. We'll consider it and, in all likelihood, agree and set up a new chapter, and you can inaugurate the writing of that chapter. - Jon Spector |
