We are already so used to the Web concept that 'it doesn't matter where you are' (global village etc) - but one remaining and, hopefully, persistent aspect of communities is the physical, f2f (face-to-face) interaction.

The most successgul online communities that I am a member of have regular live meetings and events. The idea to organise events as part of the WeAreSmarter portfolio of activities is commendable and a great opportunity for added value to all members.

The planning of events, however, doesn't yet reflect the open global nature of the community (while the enrolment drop-down menu offers the entire index of a world atlas or the UN member state database, live events remain US-centric).

It wouldn't be a bad idea to encourage 'sub-communities' in other countries to organise their own f2f activities. Models like Chapters and Clubs are well tried and tested elsewhere - can we adopt those?

This is a great idea, and I encourage all of us to figure out how we might make it happen.

Right now (meaning this morning, today) we are trying to catch up to the incoming flow of ideas, and to figure out where and how we are going to get the resources to respond to all of them. we're just in the first few days of the beta test, but we already have almost 300 people who have registered at the site, and we're a bit surprised (happily) by the volume of the early responses.

Once we get though that, however, I am fairly sure of the basic answer to your question, which is: the Community needs to do it (!), because we won't have the resources on our own. How do we help the community organize so it can, by itself, create Clubs and then live meetings around which to discuss these topics? I don't have an answer yet; perhaps others have some ideas ...

Communities are good in organising and managing themselves, and making things happen - a belief, I hope, we all share here.

In the online world, the role of a portal/platform owner is to facilitate the self-management capability and channel community efforts to their best outcome.

Having this discussion is already a part of this role. A further step should be to provide the technical functionality that enables the creation of groups (sub-communities, sub-networks, clubs, chapters or any name we collectively choose). From there on, these can have a life of their own, planning and running local events, having specific initiatives - that may eventually be disseminated as best practice and taken up by other parts of the bigger community.

So, think of adding this functionality - I imagine the tech platform used by Shared Insights already has it built-in and it would be a matter of configuring and 'switching it on' - looking forward to it!

Cheerz,
V.

Agreed. Barry - your team at Shared Insights has a ton on your plate. Any idea whether/when we can enable this concept?

we agree wholeheartedly. in fact we believe that communities require multiple channels to be really successful - including in-person events, conference calls, webcasts, on-line discussions, blogs and wikis. consequently, we will be launching other activities - including a community summit this coming spring, along with a series of skypecasts. does this approach meet your needs?

Maybe, in the spirit of a web based community, there should be no 'sub' committees, just national committees.
That is, an event in Europe, or India or the US, organised by the EU committee, the US committee, even the PNG committee, would all have equal standing.
I have just taken part in this year's IBM InnovationJam, and two things came out very clearly:
US based ideas were better than any other ideas because they came from the US and
An innovative idea is not something that hasn't been tried before, but one that hasn't been tried In the United States before, as evidenced by their enthusiastic endorsement of the suggestion that variable speed limits might be used to reduce traffic congestion by controlling traffic flow - a technique that has been used in the UK and germany for nearly 20 years.
Sorry to cite the US in my example. I'm sure there are plenty of examples of 'global' events being regionally biased

I am understanding that the theme here is:

1) Live events and meetings need to occur to ensure a successful community.

2) The collective "you" would like to have at least a one day Summit in Pan Asia and Europe.

3) There is support out there to help socialize and organize such events.

We are happy to have community events for authors to meet each other in other parts of the world - we just need some help organizing them. please advise your interest.

I had already thought that, since I wont be able to go to community meetings in the US, that I would like to check all Brazilians registered and try to keep in touch with them, and, maybe, organize something - but couldn´t extract that info from the contributor´s list - there is no way to sort members by any kind of filter...

Rather than extracting members, perhaps some of us who are not in US could offer possible dates and plces for others in the same geography to meet and see what happens?

I am based in Uk close to London (and Heathrow and Waterloo station) so would be happy to arrange a meeting with UK, French (Paris) and Belgian contributors?

Perhaps a date towards the end of week 1 in December is a good start.

Others?

I'm not far from Heathrow and London, too. Week1 December may be too short a notice for many people, but an informal meeting can be for 'anyone who can make it'.
Provided my hectic schedule doesn't suddenly take me abroad, you just announce it and I'll come :) (When? Where?)

Agenda? The weather, of course - or the Meaning of Life, if you prefer.

Let's try it, I'm in.

Best,
